Get your free estimateLennox Heat Pump Service: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
Lennox heat pump service in Ventura typically runs $150 – $650, parts and labor included, and our trucks carry the most common Lennox-specific parts for same-day repair. Most Ventura homeowners call us when the heat pump is blowing room-temperature air, short-cycling, or icing up on a mild day, and they have already tried the thermostat. You don’t need to know the exact part number before calling; we match it on site from the unit’s data plate and the symptoms in front of us.

We’re an independent service provider, not a Lennox dealer or affiliate, which means we stock parts that fit Lennox systems without being tied to a single supply chain. That independence usually gets your heat pump running faster, because we source from multiple local suppliers in Ventura County and keep the highest-failure Lennox components on our trucks.
Which Lennox Models This Applies To
Lennox heat pumps fall into three broad lines we work on regularly in Ventura: the entry-level Merit series (ML14XP1, ML17XP1), the mid-range Elite series (XP14, XP16, XP20, XP21), and the premium Signature series (XP25, SL25XPV). Each series uses different defrost control boards, reversing valves, and outdoor fan motors, so the part that fits an XP14 will not necessarily fit an XP25, even when both are nominally “3-ton” units.
The reliable way to identify your heat pump is the data plate on the outdoor unit. It lists the full model number, serial number, and refrigerant type. A Lennox model number like “XP16-036-230A01” tells us the series, the nominal tonnage (036 means 3 tons), the voltage, and the revision. When a homeowner reads us that string over the phone, we can often confirm part compatibility before we roll the truck. For Lennox specifically, we prefer OEM parts for control boards, defrost sensors, and reversing valves, because the aftermarket equivalents do not always match Lennox’s board logic or connector pinouts. For capacitors, contactors, and fan motors, a quality aftermarket part from a supplier like AmRad or Mars often matches or exceeds the original at a better price, and we’ll show you both options in the written quote.

Signs Your Lennox Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- Blowing room-temperature air in heat mode. This is usually the reversing valve failing to shift, or the system low on refrigerant. In Ventura’s coastal climate, a small refrigerant leak can take months to show up as a real temperature difference, so by the time you notice, the leak has often been running all season.
- Outdoor unit icing over on a 55-degree night. That’s the defrost control board or defrost sensor failing to trigger the brief cooling cycle that melts frost. In Ventura’s marine layer, this failure shows up as a thick white shell on the coil by morning, and it gets worse every cold snap.
- Heat pump won’t start, or hums and clicks without running. The most common culprit is the start capacitor, followed by the contactor. Both are stocked on our trucks for Lennox Merit and Elite units, because they fail often enough that we’d rather carry them than make a second trip.
- Short-cycling: the system runs for three to five minutes, shuts off, then repeats. On Lennox units, this is frequently a failing outdoor fan motor or a clogged outdoor coil. The motor has to work against higher head pressure when the coil is dirty, and Ventura’s salt air accelerates coil corrosion on units within a mile of the coast.
- Loud buzzing or grinding from the outdoor unit. A buzz that doesn’t turn into a start is usually the capacitor. A grinding sound is the fan motor bearings. Both are repairable, and both are cheaper to catch before the motor seizes and takes the control board with it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Ventura, Lennox heat pump repairs land in these ranges, parts and labor included:
- Start capacitor replacement: $150 – $280
- Contactor replacement: $180 – $320
- Defrost control board replacement: $250 – $500
- Reversing valve replacement: $450 – $650
- Outdoor fan motor replacement: $300 – $550
The range depends on which Lennox series you have, whether we use OEM or a quality aftermarket equivalent, and how accessible the part is inside the cabinet. Every quote is written before work starts, and it itemizes the part and the labor separately so you can see what you’re paying for. Every repair is guaranteed for 365 days under the Done Right Promise. If the same part fails inside that window, we come back and fix it at no charge. No argument, no second invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: confirm the thermostat is set correctly, verify the breakers at the panel, and visually inspect the outdoor coil for leaves, salt crust, or obvious blockage. If the fins are clogged, a gentle garden-hose rinse from the inside out can help, but turn off the breaker first.
Anything involving the capacitor, contactor, control board, or refrigerant is not a DIY job. A capacitor holds a charge even with power disconnected, and touching the wrong terminal can put you in the ER. Refrigerant work requires an EPA certification, and a reversing valve swap requires brazing and a full evacuation. Devin Marlowe will tell you plainly whether a repair is worth doing at all, and we’ll never push a replacement when a $200 capacitor gets you three more years. Call (831) 539-0291 for an exact quote.
FAQs
A Lennox heat pump in Ventura lasts 12 to 16 years on average, but coastal units within a mile of the ocean lose a few years to salt air corrosion on the coil and electrical connections unless they get regular cleaning and corrosion treatment. Inland Ventura units, especially in the foothills above the 126, run longer because the air is drier and the heat load is lower.
Capacitors, contactors, and defrost sensors are replaced, not repaired, because they cost less than the labor to rebuild, and a repaired component won’t carry a meaningful warranty. More expensive parts like reversing valves can sometimes be reseated or have a solenoid coil replaced separately, which we’ll quote as a lower-cost option when it’s viable.
Most single-part Lennox heat pump repairs take 45 to 90 minutes once we’re on site, and we carry the common parts on the truck. Reversing valve replacement runs two to three hours because it involves recovering refrigerant, brazing, and recharging the system.
We stock capacitors, contactors, defrost boards, fan motors, and defrost sensors for the most common Lennox Merit and Elite models on our trucks, and our local supply houses in Ventura County carry Signature-series parts same-day in most cases. If we ever need to order something obscure, we’ll tell you before you commit to the repair, and we’ll give you a written ETA.
