Rheem Heat Pump Service: The Ventura Owner’s Guide

We stock Rheem-compatible heat pump parts on our trucks and install them across Ventura, typically for $150 – $650 parts and labor included. Most Rheem heat pump service calls we run are same-day or next-day, with a written price before we open a single panel. The way owners usually find us: a Rheem unit that runs but won’t heat, makes a grinding noise from the outdoor cabinet, or trips its breaker on the first cold night of the year.

Rheem builds solid heat pumps, but the coastal air here on the Ventura coast works against them in specific ways. Salt-laden moisture off the Pacific corrodes outdoor coil fins and electrical connections faster than the OEM lifespan charts would suggest. Add in the marine layer’s damp mornings and you get contactor pitting and capacitor swelling that inland Rheem units just don’t see as early. Devin Marlowe has pulled Rheem heat pump parts out of beachside condenser units that looked twenty years older than the equipment’s actual age, all because of salt air working into the terminals.

Which Rheem Models This Applies To

This page covers Rheem’s residential heat pump lines: the RP14, RP15, RP16, RP17, RP18, and the two-stage RP20 series, plus the older RPNL and RPQL units still running all over Ventura homes built in the 1990s and 2000s. Each series uses its own control board logic, defrost sensor placement, and compressor contactor spec, so a part that fits an RP15 will not necessarily work in an RP17. The model number is on a metal tag on the outdoor unit’s corner panel, near where the refrigerant lines enter the cabinet. The first four characters tell you the series; the next three digits are the nominal capacity in thousands of BTUs. Write down the full model and serial number before you call anyone. It saves a trip and gets you an accurate quote faster.

For Rheem equipment specifically, the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision matters more than with some other brands. Rheem uses proprietary defrost control boards on most post-2010 heat pumps, and a generic aftermarket board often drops features like demand-defrost timing or low-ambient lockout. On universal wear parts like capacitors, contactors, and fan motors, quality aftermarket equivalents from Mars, Supco, or Packard are every bit as reliable as OEM and usually cost less. We stock both on the truck and we’ll tell you plainly which one makes sense for your unit’s age and condition. We also carry select parts for Carrier, Trane, and Lennox equipment, so a mixed-brand property isn’t a problem.

Signs Your Rheem Heat Pump Service Is Failing

  • The outdoor unit runs but blows lukewarm air. The compressor is likely running but the reversing valve isn’t shifting, or the system lost refrigerant and is struggling to move heat. In a Rheem, this is often the reversing valve coil or a sticking valve body. You’ll notice it most when the unit switches between heating and cooling seasons.
  • You hear a loud hum then a click, but the fan never spins. That’s the textbook sign of a failed dual-run capacitor. Rheem heat pumps use one capacitor to start both the compressor and the outdoor fan, and when it swells or leaks, both sit dead. A clicking relay with no fan is another giveaway.
  • The breaker trips only when the heat pump kicks on. On a Rheem, this usually points to a grounded compressor, a shorted crankcase heater, or corroded terminal connections arcing inside the disconnect box. Salt air near Ventura Harbor accelerates this corrosion substantially.
  • The outdoor coil turns into a block of ice on mild nights. A failed defrost control board or defrost thermostat prevents the unit from reversing briefly to melt frost. In Ventura, where winter nights hover in the 40s and 50s, icing is a control problem, not a refrigerant charge problem, more often than homeowners think.
  • You smell a sharp, metallic odor from the supply vents when heat comes on. That’s often the smell of an overheating blower motor or a failing indoor fan capacitor in the air handler. If you smell anything like burning or melting plastic, shut the system down at the thermostat and call us. It’s not a part to guess at.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Rheem heat pump service in Ventura, here’s what you should expect to pay, parts and labor included:

Repair Installed Price Range
Dual-run capacitor $150 – $300
Contactor $150 – $280
Defrost control board $250 – $500
Reversing valve coil $180 – $350
Condenser fan motor $350 – $650
Compressor (covered under warranty) $400 – $900 labor

Every one of those numbers is a written price you’ll see before we start work. No exceptions. The range depends on the series, whether we use OEM or a quality aftermarket part, and how hard the unit is to access. Every repair includes a written guarantee: 365 days on the part and labor. If the same part fails within that year, we come back and replace it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise and it’s written on your invoice, not explained in fine print.

DIY or Call Us?

There are tasks we’ll tell you to do yourself, like checking the thermostat batteries, making sure the outdoor unit isn’t covered in leaves or dog hair, and confirming the breakers are on. Those cost nothing and fix a surprising number of “dead” heat pumps. But once you’re inside the electrical panel of a Rheem outdoor unit, the safe DIY window closes. A dual capacitor can hold a charge at 370 or 440 volts even with the power off, enough to stop a heart. The compressor terminals run at 240 volts. If you’re not a licensed electrician or HVAC tech, no capacitor or contactor savings is worth that risk. We’re not saying that to scare you off a $30 part. We’re saying it because we’ve seen what a screwdriver slip does to a finger. If the unit needs any electrical component replaced, call (831) 539-0291 and let us handle it. A bad diagnosis costs more than the service call.
